Mechanical insects come up again and again in 3D metal puzzle searches: bees, wasps, spiders, dragonflies and mantises with exposed “steampunk” detail. This roundup compares insect kits from five brands using the part counts, build times, sizes and assembly methods published on each Amazon listing. We have not assembled these kits, so treat build notes as estimates and check the current listing before buying.

For other creatures, see our best metal animal model kits.

Two different kinds of kit

Insect puzzles come in two construction styles, and the listing tells you which you are buying:

  • Tab-and-sheet kits (the Metal Earth Dragonfly and Piececool Cicada): parts are clipped from flat steel sheets and joined by bending tabs. No screws.
  • Screw-assembled kits (LONGPIN): individual stainless parts are joined with screws and nuts, and joints can often be posed.

The Metalkitor and OreilleStar listings do not state their assembly method, so check the product photos before buying if you have a preference.

Part count varies by a factor of 100 here, from the 12-piece Stag Beetle to the 1,200-piece Giant Mantis. The two Metal Earth kits and the Piececool Cicada are small desk pieces; the mantis, hornet, spider and bee are larger display models with multi-hour builds.

How to choose

  • A first insect kit: the Piececool Cicada (28 parts, about two hours) or the Metal Earth Steampunk Dragonfly (moderate difficulty).
  • Something that poses: the LONGPIN Bee and Metalkitor Giant Mantis list poseable joints.
  • Something that lights up: the Metalkitor Spider and Giant Mantis both list lights.
  • A long project: the Giant Mantis, with a listed 16–20 hours. See our Giant Mantis review and the largest 3D metal puzzles.

Screw-assembled kits use different tools and skills from tab kits; our mechanical metal model kits guide explains the difference.

What we could not verify

The LONGPIN Bee lists 180+ pieces in its bullets but 314 and 320 in other fields, and two different sizes. The Giant Mantis lists three different sizes and two difficulty labels, and its battery information conflicts. The Metalkitor Spider lists a light but no power source. The Stag Beetle’s 12-piece count and the Hornet’s 436-piece count come from structured fields only. We also have not confirmed which assembly method the Metalkitor and OreilleStar kits use.
